"City As?" is a miniature piece composed for the AEKI Ensemble in Finland. This work emerges as a reflection on cities and their boundaries, taking into account that the ensemble’s members come from various parts of the world, including Spain, Taiwan, and the United States.
The piece explores the idea of the identity of a "global citizen" in a world where physical and cultural borders are increasingly blurred. The title, "City As?", poses an open question about the meaning and implications of inhabiting a city today. Although it may appear to be an imperfect translation—equivalent to “City how?” in Spanish—this ambiguity reflects the complex and multifaceted nature of contemporary urban life.
In this context, the music becomes a medium for exploring how people from different cultural backgrounds can meet and coexist in a shared space, challenging the established boundaries of belonging and territoriality. The piece not only questions how we define our cities but also how these cities shape our identities and our understanding of the world.
